Providers of Mental Health Programs in Erie County New York

Client Advocacy Service is a public interest advocacy center providing civil legal representation to mental health clients 18 years and older in matters such as Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Public Assistance, Medicaid and Food Stamps. Client Advocacy Service also provides information and advice on mental health advocacy.

Client Advocacy Service provides:

  • Civil legal assistance to mental health consumers over the age of 18 in Erie and Niagara Counties to ensure that they receive the essential public benefits, necessary services and legal protection to which they are entitled
  • Training to mental health professionals, mental health consumers and the community at large
  • Legal consultation to the providers of mental health services, mental health consumers and their families
Legal assistance and representation are provided in the following areas:
  • Social Security Disability: obtaining and retaining benefits, overpayments and work incentives
  • Supplemental Security Income: obtaining and retaining initial benefits, overpayments and work incentives, including PASS Plans
  • Medicaid
  • Public Assistance (Safety Net, food stamps, TANF)
  • Landlord/tenant problems
  • Complaints or problems concerning outpatient mental health services
  • Utility problems (shut-off notices, payment problems)
  • Debt collection (consumer credit, student loans)
  • VESID appeals
Legal assistance is not provided in the following areas:
  • Divorces, separation, orders of separation, support, child custody
  • Veterans' benefits
  • Criminal matters
  • Traffic matters
  • Malpractice and personal injury litigation
  • Incompetency proceedings'
  • Bankruptcies
  • Retention and treatment over objection hearings for inpatients
  • Workmen's Compensation

There are no fees charged for services provided by Client Advocacy Service.
