Inner I Program is a school-based mental health program that targets children in early primary grades. Children engage in a series of classroom presentations using age-appropriate activities to develop such socialization skills as tolerance & respect for others, communication & decision making, personal safety, anger management & conflict resolution. Follow-up materials focusing on children’s mental health provide on-going family and teacher support. Prevention Through Education The Inner I Program is provided for students Pre-Kindergarten through Second grade as well as Primary Special Education classes throughout Erie County. The primary goal of the INNER I PROGRAM is to assist children in developing a strong foundation for mental health. This is accomplished through age appropriate activities that assist youngsters in recognizing, exploring, understanding and coping with the feelings and experiences that affect their daily lives. Classroom Presentations Our specially trained educators offer a series of three to four presentations to children in classrooms and other settings. Presentations are generally 30 to 45 minutes in length. Teacher participation is encouraged and, when requested, programs can be tailored to meet a particular group's special needs. Follow-up materials are provided for families and teachers so that they may continue to build on skills learned in the classroom presentations. In this way the INNER I's basic principles may be incorporated into daily life and provide a comprehensive prevention and mental health education program. Presentation Topics Educational programming for the INNER I PROGRAM supplements the goals and objectives of the New York State Health Education Curriculum. Presentations may focus on areas such as communication, safety, decision making, identification of feelings, anger management and conflict resolution. Our age appropriate presentations are designed to stimulate active student participation and discussion through the use of educational kits, activities, videos, written materials and may include puppets.
